Reading Recovery is a national Early Intervention Service (EIS) that provides students with assistance before the student is identified as learning-disabled. Reading Recovery students receive 30-minute lessons each school day for 12 to 20 weeks from a specially trained teacher. As soon as students can read and write at grade level and can demonstrate that they can continue to achieve, their lessons are discontinued and new students receive individual instruction. Training to become a Reading Recovery teacher leader requires committing to one year of intensive study, followed by monthly professional development sessions. Through face-to-face and online class sessions, prospective teacher leaders complete a course of study that includes: Some considerations for bringing Reading Recovery to your school or district include having access to a regional Reading Recovery training site; a commitment to implementing as a first grade literacy intervention; and available staffing for a half time Reading Recovery teacher.
